Things We Look For When Looking at Your Dental X-rays

You may wonder what we see when we review dental x-rays. Today, we also use an intraoral camera so you can get a close look at your teeth. By educating patients this way, we can help them make better dental decisions. X-rays, though, are somewhat of a mystery, as it takes special skills and training to review the results and diagnose dental conditions. When we take the x-rays, we do so to check decay, cavities, or impacted teeth that cannot be seen easily.
What are Dental X-rays?
Dental x-rays are also called radiographs. They help us evaluate your teeth and oral health. The radiographs use reduced levels of radiation to capture the image. X-rays are usually performed yearly and are part of a dental exam. When you get x-rays are determined by your age, current state of oral health, and whether or not you have a history of gum disease or tooth decay. A child may need to get x-rays more frequently than an adult, as x-rays help to support use determine dental development.
What We Check when X-raying Teeth
When we take x-rays, you seek any problems with gum disease or tooth decay between the teeth and in areas we can miss when taking a visual exam. We can also see how the teeth look overall and check for an impaction. When we have this type of information, we can make a more precise and thorough diagnosis. We can follow up with the intraoral camera to show the patient how we may treat a problem. Fortunately, with advancements in technology, we can keep our patients informed and practice prevention more easily. Have you had x-rays taken of your teeth lately? If not, contact our office for an exam and cleaning. Just like brushing and flossing the teeth, x-rays should be an integral part of a regular dental routine. While we may be able to give you a good check-up upon visual exam, x-rays help us to confirm our findings. Give us a call to set up an appointment for a full exam and cleaning.
